#6 – My Doors of Perception (12/26/13 to 6/3/14)
This piece took me about 130 hours to create, and although this was the last art piece that originated at Coffee Creek, I ended up finishing it at the Oregon State Penitentiary when I was transferred there in mid January, 2014. I didn’t actually finish this piece at the Penitentiary, but rather took it with me to the next prison I was transferred to in May of the same year. Even though this piece is done on the paper they give to ‘indignant’ (poor) prisoners, it is one of my favorites.
Though it might seem to some like there is a lot of planning done for all of my creations, there was no prior planning done for this piece. All the decisions that I had to make during its design were made as I was creating the design itself. During its creation I felt my hand was guided by an unforeseen force. I didn’t even name this piece until months after it was done, as the name hadn’t come to me yet. I ended up naming this piece ‘My Doors of Perception’ due to the end result looking like actual doors about ¾ of the way up the page. If you look closely you will see the word “Doors” (as in the band ‘The Doors’) and other information I’ve hidden in the design. If you stare at this piece long enough it can alter your state of mind, and your perspective in magical ways.
